Natural Hydraulic Lime is a type of lime that sets through a combination of reaction with water (hydraulic set) and carbonation (reaction with CO₂). It is made by firing limestone and marl that naturally contains clay and other minerals. It is the clay content that gives NHL its hydraulic properties — the higher the clay, the stronger and faster the set in the presence of water.
